Engineering Approval for Truck Cranes, Tippers, Hooklifts & Tow Couplings

Commercial Vehicle Compliance (CVC) provides engineering assessment and VASS certification for truck equipment and structural modifications in Victoria, including cranes, tippers, hooklifts, tow couplings and associated chassis or subframe work. CVC works with body builders, equipment installers, fleet operators and manufacturers from the design stage through inspection and final certification.

Typical projects

  • Truck-mounted cranes and supporting structures.
  • Tipper bodies and J4-related engineering assessment.
  • Hooklift and skip-loader installations.
  • Tow couplings and associated mounting structures.
  • Subframes, cross-members and body-mounting systems.
  • Chassis reinforcement, wheelbase and rear-overhang changes associated with equipment installation.
  • Axle-load and weight-distribution assessment after equipment or body fitment.

What CVC checks

The engineering assessment depends on the installation and vehicle configuration. It can include chassis and mounting details, load paths, fasteners, reinforcement, equipment position, axle ratings, wheelbase, rear overhang, clearances and the supporting evidence required under the applicable Victorian and heavy-vehicle modification framework.

Calculations, drawings and structural evidence

Where required, CVC can prepare or review engineering calculations, CAD drawings, axle-load reports and structural analysis. For complex geometry or concentrated loads, finite element analysis (FEA) may be used where it is technically appropriate.

Plan the installation before fabrication

For cranes, hooklifts, tippers and other concentrated-load equipment, involving the engineer before fabrication can identify issues with mounting locations, chassis reinforcement and axle distribution before the body or equipment is permanently installed.

Heavy vehicle modification framework

Heavy vehicle modifications are assessed against the applicable requirements, including the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 (VSB6). The exact modification code and evidence requirements depend on the vehicle and work being carried out.
