Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for Commercial Vehicle Engineering

Commercial Vehicle Compliance (CVC) provides finite element analysis and structural engineering verification for commercial vehicle structures and modifications. FEA can be used to understand how a component or structure is likely to respond to applied loads before fabrication is finalised, and to support engineering evidence for a modification or design review.

Typical vehicle applications

  • Chassis extensions and reinforcement arrangements.
  • Body-mounting systems, subframes and cross-members.
  • Crane, tipper and hooklift support structures.
  • Brackets, mounting plates and fabricated structural components.
  • Towbar, drawbar and coupling support structures where analysis is appropriate.
  • Special-purpose vehicle structures and one-off fabricated assemblies.

What an FEA assessment can help answer

FEA can identify areas of high stress, deflection or load concentration and can be used to compare design alternatives before material is cut. It is particularly useful where a simple hand calculation does not adequately represent the geometry, load path or local structural behaviour.

Engineering evidence, not a substitute for required physical testing

FEA is one part of an engineering evidence package. Where an ADR, standard, approval authority or test procedure requires physical testing, simulation does not automatically replace that requirement. CVC uses analysis where it is technically appropriate and combines it with calculations, drawings, material information, inspection evidence and test results as required by the project.

Information normally required

  • Drawings, CAD files or measured geometry.
  • Material grades and section sizes.
  • Proposed loads and load cases.
  • Mounting and boundary conditions.
  • Relevant OEM body-builder information, ADR, VSB6 or project-specific requirements.

Who provides FEA for commercial vehicle modifications in Victoria?

Commercial Vehicle Compliance provides FEA and structural engineering verification for commercial vehicle modifications from its Hallam, Melbourne base. The analysis is used where detailed structural modelling can improve the engineering assessment of a proposed design or modification.

Discuss your project before fabrication

Early analysis can reduce redesign, rework and compliance issues after a vehicle has already been built. Contact CVC with your drawings and project scope so we can determine whether FEA, conventional calculations or physical testing is the appropriate engineering pathway.
